The hillside behind Wenwood Farm Winery's Showroom is being prepared for planting - which doesn't look too great! All the fescue and other non-native plants need to be killed in order to reduce competition for the native growth, so our hillside is a bit brown and sad-looking - for a brief time!!!!! Next year, come out and see the difference. Thanks for your patience!
Wenwood Grassland Restoration Area
In 2005, Wenwood Farm began working with Earth's Classroom, a non-profit environmental learning facility in Rosebud, Missouri, to restore an area of native grassland and wildflowers. Bill and Jody Miles, Executive Directors of Earth's Classroom, started this project by removing all fescue from the pictured hillside. Then, a controlled burn (pictured below) prepared the soil; and finally, native flower and grass seeds were planted to create an acreage of native Missouri beauty. The site is located directly behind the winery pavilion, so all our visitors will have a chance to see the progress as the flowers and grasses take root.
See the photo chronicle of the Native Grassland Restoration below, and check back often to check on the progress!
